They are still very much in existence. Commonly known as MUD (multi-user dungeon.) Completely text based, you can just telnet into one of the servers and enjoy.
IC the MMORPGs are not that old, EQ started in 1999 before that there were two big mmorpgs D&D and one more (can’t recall it right now.)
MUDs go back to the BBS age (if you know what I am talking about.) But that time there were these graphics games too, like Cars (great grand father of NFS,) Prince of Persia etc. Anyways I still play one MUD and is pretty interesting too (managing your kingdom with your own army and defending it from others.)
If any of you are interested do a google, most of them are free to play.
