Mage Mercs do not have any skill which can affect the player as well. That is all Merc skills are utilized by the Merc itself.
I have personally tried & compared Mage Merc to other Mercs, and my personal findings are that a Mage Merc is much better than any other Merc when it comes to PvE. They do more damage than any other Merc. Plus somehow the Artificial Intelligence of mage merc is better than Archer Merc. I have seen that if you put both Merc in "attack closest enemy" mode in a heavy mob area, archer merc will run a lot and due to this his attacks will be slower. And more often he will physically be so close to creeps that he will be taking hits as well and consuming pots. While the Mage merc is better in this mode, use intelligence in a better way, run less but in safe locations thus giving continued attacks and consuming less HP.
This, I tried with same level archer & mage merc with different skills and almost all Epi 1 maps. But anyway, these are my personal observations.
As mercs get 1 Def or attack per stat point, I prefer having ele merc for better damage. Robust lvl 1 or 2 is enough for all Epi 1 maps as their HP is also good enough. Higher lvls may be required for Epi 2 maps.
Defense Mastery & Offense Mastery are self explanatory.
Blunt restricts the damage to a range which is better than normal, for a fixed time. That is if normal Ele mage Merc's damage is ranging between 500 to 600, it will be restricted to 550 to 600 for a fixed time (just an example). It also increase the damage.
Breeze makes creep's ele attack power as 0 apart from incresing merc's ele damage.
Elemental mastery makes creep's ele def power as 0.

@kadruu Gr8 explanation
I guess thats what greenie wanted
Go for ele mage. I got lvl 78 warrior with mage merc lvl 88. It makes 2.2K
critic on attk on r3 creeps when it usees skill. For HK, warrior merc will be useless
so just go for mage. The attack is insane. And i personaly think mage is much
better merc than any other merc in PVE ...
But i went for warrior merc for Snipearcher just for the tanking ability,
With mage merc , u cant hit the big bosses, u will die of hp pots in secs.
thanks,
